Ch. 2  Popple-Welfare Programs(W).

September 12-14

We will continue our discussion of Social Welfare by describing and classifying the major programs, bring Popple to class. Read Chapter 3 about history, values, ethics, and methods (M). We will discuss the history of the profession (W).

September 19-21

We will watch a video about the Orphan Trains (M).

The NASW Code of Ethics will be distributed. We will watch another video on social work history The Women of Hull House (W).

September 26- 28

We will begin a discussion of generalist practice, case management, values, ethics, legal interface.

The 1st Workout will be given out (due 10/5) (M). Attention will be given to the theories and methods that guide generalist social work practice. The Strengths Assessment workout will be discussed and will be due on 10/19 (W).

Felicia Mitchell, KU doc student, will describe her experience working with indigenous persons in healthcare (M).  We will continue the discussion of case management and social work practice with a presentation by Erin Cole, Personal Support Specialist, Women's Employment Network, http://www.kcwen.org/. (W).

Read Chapter 5 for this discussion about diversity in Social Welfare. The Personal Cultural History will be discussed and is due on 10/26. (W)

Matthew Blankers, KU School of Social Welfare is going to discuss his unique life experiences (M). Review for SLO #1. We will look at a video on in-state tuition for children of immigrant Kansans.  . (W).

Poverty is a critical issue to families and children throughout the world. In preparation for the next two classes, read chapter 7-8. Lillie Okwuone, East Central Kansas Assistance Network (ECKAN), will give us an overview of their services for at-risk families (M) The Budget workout will be discussed and is due on 11/16 . We will continue to discussing poverty  and its crucial impact on the delivery of social services. (W)

November 7-9

 

Jennie Marsh, KDOC, will be talking with us about services for individuals and families that have survived domestic violence(M). Consumers of mental health service will discuss their experience (W).  Read Chapter 13 in Popple, and pages 137-139 in the Workout book.

Child welfare is centrally identified with the social work profession. (Chapter 10) We will start this discussion with a broad overview of child welfare policy at the state and federal level (M). Brad Cooke and Mathew Faulk, Outreach Specialists, Bert Nash Mental Health Center, will discuss the services and efforts provided to individuals in the Lawrence community to make housing accessible (W). benefit
