We will continue
our discussion of Social Welfare by describing and classifying the
major programs, bring Popple to class. Read Chapter 3 about history,
values, ethics, and
methods (M). We will discuss the history of the profession (W). |

September 21-23 |
We will watch a
video about the Orphan Trains (M). The NASW Code of
Ethics will be distributed. We will watch another video on social work
history The Women of Hull House (W). |

September 28- 30 |
We will begin a
discussion of generalist practice, case management, values, ethics, legal
interface. The 1st
Workout will be given out (due 10/8) (M). We will continue
the discussion of case management and social work practice with a
presentation by Erin Butsch, Johnson County Court Services. Read
Chapter 11 to complement this presentation (W). |

Venida Cheanault , Vice President of Academic Affiars, Haskell indian
Nations University, will present his views on various forms of racism
and its operation in western cultures (M). Attention
will be given to the theories and methods
that guide generalist social
work practice. The Strengths
Assessment workout will be discussed
and will be due on 10/21 (W). |

The discussion of
racial, ethnic, and religious diversity
faced in social work will
continue. Read Chapters 5-6 for this discussion. The Personal
Cultural History will be discussed and is due on 10/26. (M) Read Chapter 6 for
this discussion. A representative from the Islamic Center will be
talking about social work and spirituality. (W) |

Matthew Blankers,
KU School of Social Welfare is going to discuss his unique life
experiences (M). Review for SLO #1 Ranjit Arab, University Press &
KU School of Journalism, will come to discuss Tuition Fees for students
with immigrant parents. (W). |

Poverty is a
critical issue to families and children throughout the world. We will
be discussing poverty its crucial impact on the delivery of social
services. In preparation for the next two classes, read chapter 7-8.
The Budget workout will be discussed
and is due on 11/16 (M). We will
wrap up our discussion of poverty and Jeanette Collier, East Central
Kansas Assistance Network (ECKAN), will give us an overview of their
services for at-risk families (W). |

KDOC, will be talking with us about services for individuals and
families that have survived domestic violence(M).
Suzanne Wikle, Kansas Action for Children,
and Carla Wozniak, Kansas Department of Corrections, (W). Read
Chapter 13 in Popple, and pages 137-139 in the Workout book. |

Darla Bellflower,
Johnson County Mental Health, and several consumers of mental health
services in Johnson County will talk about the program and its impact
on clients (M). Brad Cooke and Mathew Faulk, Outreach Specialists, Bert
Nash Mental Health Center, will discuss the services and efforts
provided to individuals in the Lawrence community to make housing
accessible (W). |

November 23-25 (Thanksgiving
Break) |
Child welfare is
centrally identified with the social work profession. We will start
this discussion with a broad overview of child welfare policy at the
state and federal level (M). |
