Plenary Address for International Conference on Social Work and Counseling Practice
    (
After clicking on this link, see Dr. Canda's plenary abstract, Power Point presentation, and manuscript at the top of the page).

This article presents an overview of the movement for spiritually sensitive social work practice that has recently emerged in the United States and several countries, including key concepts, values, evidence base, examples of practices, and international considerations. Spiritually sensitive social work addresses the spiritual goals and aspirations of clients and their communities in a holistic and culturally appropriate manner. It respects the full variety of religious and nonreligious expressions of spirituality.

  • Early Publications of the Society for Spirituality and Social Work

This is a collection of the publications of the Society for Spirituality and Social Work (1989-1992), when I was the Society director and publications editor. It contains essays and research articles by some of the early leaders of the movement for spirituality in social work. The bibliographies included indicate the range of publications available in the USA during the late 1980s to early 1990s. This collection has never been published all together; the contents are rare to find through libraries, so I have made this collection available online.
